A new study from the University of Eastern Finland and Kuopio University Hospital finds that adolescents’ long-term heavy use of alcohol alters cortical excitability and functional connectivity in the brain. The participants were 13 to 18 years old at the onset of the study and were 27 at the time of this follow up study. Alcohol use caused significant alterations in both electrical and chemical neurotransmission among the study participants.
