Alert! Researchers at Brigham Young University have used functional MRI scans of people’s brains to reveal the unconscious mechanisms behind the way we perceive security warnings. Their findings? Our own inattention and the repetitive exposure to the warnings, causes us to ignore them. The researchers have been working in collaboration with Google to have alerts wait for people to complete tasks and have messages appear in different colors so that multi-tasking viewers are more likely to respond.
