There are established links between allergies and ADHD or autism and also between inflammation and autism, schizophrenia, or ADHD. Researchers at The Ohio State University advance research in this area by examining the cellular-level changes due to prenatal exposure to allergens in this study of rats. The study measures changes in the number and behavior of immune cells in the developing fetal brains and also the density of juvenile animals’ dendritic spines, which are essential to cellular-level communication in the brain. Results show that prenatal exposure to allergens affects the number and type of immune cells in offspring and impaired mental flexibility in juveniles.
