A research team from Boston University believes that blood sample analysis can be used to forecast vulnerability to life-threatening illnesses and expected mortality. By analyzing the biomarkers of nearly 5,000 adults, they were able to link a person’s biomarker patterns or “signatures” to healthy or unhealthy ageing. Their research revealed significant associations with physical function, morbidity and mortality suggesting that these patterns represent differences in biological ageing. A significant benefit of the study is that the researchers may be able to identify those individuals who may be at risk of a wide range of diseases long before any clinical signs become apparent. And all that from a simple drop of blood.
