The team of 60 international scientists called the Cognitive Genomics Consortium (COGENT) studied the genes of 35,000 people. In addition to identifying specific genes related to cognitive ability, the team also revealed a genetic overlap between psychiatric disorders and reduced cognitive ability in such areas as reasoning, problems solving, learning, and memory. Their findings will accelerate the development of new treatments for cognitive disorders of the brain, such as schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
