The courtroom is getting an artificial intelligence (AI) makover. When Chief Justice John Roberts visited Renssealaer Polythechnic Institute, the university’s president asked the Chief Justice whether he could foresee a day when smart machines and AI would become part of the court’s operations. He replied, “It’s a day that’s here.” The Chief Justice said the court had particular interest in a case in which a computer’s secret algorithm, which the accused individual was unable to inspect or challenge, played a role in his conviction.
