Google’s London-based DeepMind has announced it is working with University College London Hospital on a project to improve treatment of brain and neck cancers. Currently clinicians target the treatment through a process called “segmentation,” which involves drawing around different parts of the patient’s anatomy on scans, letting the radiotherapy machines know which tissue to target and which tissue to leave. This process takes about four hours. DeepMind believes its machine-learning techniques can reduce that time to one hour.
