A seventeen-year-old boy was accepted into a clinical trial offering treatment for a rare degenerative eye disease that leads to irreversible blindness. The new treatment attempts to slow or reverse an inherited disease by delivering a new gene to the site of a mutated, disease-causing one. This type of gene therapy is in the midst of a major revival for illnesses such as hemophilia, immune disorders, and degenerative eye diseases, with several small trials demonstrating promising results
