A scalp device delivering low-intensitity electrical fields can slow the growth of a deadly brain tumor. New research by scientists at Northwestern tests the new treatment for glioblastoma using alternating electric currents called tumor-treating fields (TTFields). The combination of the TTFields therapy with chemotherapy led to a significant improvement in halting the progression of the cancer and overall survival in patients leading to a substantially higher fraction of patients alive at two, three or four years after diagnosis. Patients reported mild to moderate skin irritation on the scalp, but otherwise the TTFields therapy greatly contributes to the successful treatment options for brain tumors.
